I am building a gaming computer and I have two options for a video card. I Which of these two cards is better:
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB
or
nVidia GeForce GTS 240 1024MB
Which will deliver a better and clearer gaming experience?|||The Radeon 4850 is the better gaming card (and usually costs less too)
The GTS 240 is a rebranded 9800GT, which is a good card. But the Radeon 4850 performs about dead-even with the GTS 250/9800GTX+ which is a step above the 9800GT.
ATI's pricing is very aggressive- their cards are priced about $30 less than Nvidia cards of equal performance, pitting them against less powerful models- so the Radeon 4850 is priced to match the GeForce 9800GT instead of a GTS 250 which is it's real competition, the Radeon 4870 sells for about the price of a GTS 250 instead the GTX 260 (which is it's performance counterpart) etc.

The 512mb vs 1gb of video memory isn't significant- the extra memory only comes into play when gaming at very high resolutions (above 1920x1080). So unless you've got a 30" monitor or something like that, a 512mb card is fine. In any event, 1gb versions of the 4850 are plentiful.

I have a 9800gt, a few friend have the 4850, and i can testify that the 4850 is faster.
512MB / 1GB means little (aka nothing) at this performance point.
Don't take anyones word for it though, read reviews, use google aswell.
